Rochdale Storage – The Ideal Solution

May 24, 2019/in Customers, Driving, HGV, LGV, Logistics, lorry, News, safety, Uncategorized, weather /by The Source Partnership

Rochdale: storage’s ideal solution. As experienced warehousing and logistics providers, we’ve put a huge amount of effort over the years as our business has grown into where our headquarters should be based.

What space offers value for money and return for our customers? Does the warehouse provide the very best in safety? Which location will allow us to offer convenience for drivers?

Following thorough research and pooling together our professional teams’ long-standing experience, we made the decision to base our headquarters in Rochdale.

The town lies just outside of Manchester – a city whose growth, wealth and business opportunities have soared exponentially over the past decade. Now standing as the UK’s second largest economy, Manchester is a hub for investment. With Rochdale lying less than 10 miles away from the city, our warehousing is the ideal partner to support business growth.

Not only is Rochdale storage advantageous for Manchester companies in terms of delivering goods to store, but our warehouses’ location also means that the transportation of stock to customers throughout the country is smooth and accessible. Sitting just off the M62, our Rochdale storage warehousing solutions offer easy access to Liverpool, through to Leeds and further out towards Yorkshire.

With the M6 only an hour away, Lancashire, Carlisle and Scotland can be accessed to the North, and easy travel down to Birmingham, Coventry and beyond to the South can be achieved.

Located in the North West of England, the Welsh border is a mere 50 miles away, providing connection to not only one country, but two – the Holyhead ferry route offers direct access to Dublin with up to six crossings a day.

No matter what sector your business deals in, there’s no better place to safely store your ambient temperature stock than Rochdale. As part of the Manchester’s rapidly growing enterprise scene within easy reach of motorway access to the North, South, Wales and Ireland for customer distribution – make your next storage move Rochdale.

Behind Barnes: Transport Planner

February 26, 2019/in Customers, Driving, HGV, LGV, Logistics, lorry, News, safety, Uncategorized, weather /by The Source Partnership

This year, we’ll be taking a look behind the scenes at Barnes Logistics and shining the spotlight on the people who make our business the success it is. From our professional drivers to HR managers, it takes a large team to ensure we deliver the highest quality Just In Time logistics services to our clients.

Today, we caught up with Joe Haywood, our Transport Planner in Rochdale…

What does your role as Transport Planner entail, Joe?

My role involves many things! My job is, broadly, to ensure we have the right number of professional drivers and lorries on the road to meet our clients’ demand and for deliveries to run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. You need to be a great communicator, and be able to keep a cool head in high-pressure situations.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I start the day planning for the next: we have scheduled rotas and plans in place for the week and I refer to these daily to keep on track. I have to take aspects such as holidays, sickness and any other reasons a driver may not be working that specific day, and to accommodate this. I also manage the servicing of our vehicles – I work very closely with our drivers to learn about, and rectify, any vehicular issues.

Can you tell us about your career journey?

I have been working in the transport sector for over five years now, starting at 18 with a role as a Transport Administrator. This got my foot in the door, and whilst I moved up the ladder, I also decided to take time out to travel through Asia and Australia! In June 2018, I joined the Barnes team and have been using the skills and experience I’ve gained throughout the years to Rochdale.

What would you recommend to others looking to join the industry?

Transport is a rewarding and exciting industry – but it can be challenging! You have to be an organised person who’s always switched on. New issues come up each day which I haven’t dealt with before, so I have to apply my experience and industry knowledge to each new challenge. It’s always satisfying when you leave the office knowing that you have planned everything correctly and left with it running smoothly.

If you think you have what it takes and are interested in a career in the transport and logistics profession, get in touch!

Beating the Winter Blues

December 12, 2017/in Driving, HGV, LGV, Logistics, lorry, News, safety, weather /by The Source Partnership

The decorations go up, the glasses get re-filled and the out of office goes on – there’s nothing like a festive break, is there? That is, of course, for those who work office jobs where the whole business can shut down for a week or two and get picked back up again in January. For drivers, the reality can be a little different – whether it’s delivering stock for post-Christmas sales or vital machinery parts for businesses, the world of logistics keeps turning and the roads keep calling, and drivers are often on the road when others are tucked up at home in front of the fire.

It is, admittedly, something which can cause drivers to experience some melancholy – which is why, following our previous discussions on mental health and summer driving attitude, we have decided to extend the conversation to a time when many people can often feel at their lowest. A study from the Samaritans in 2014 found that almost half of men felt depressed or sad around Christmas, and with logistics and driving still male-dominated industries (something that we most certainly hope will, and actively work towards, changing), it felt appropriate to look at how those who work in the professional driving sector might be able to help tackle swings of low mood in the run up, and during, the festive period.

The first step we would look to take would be one of practicality – countless studies have shown that eating the right foods and treating the body with the respect it deserves has a huge impact on serotonin levels, helping to battle low moods. This doesn’t mean you have to forego the classic Christmas delicacies – the high levels of zinc in walnuts can help in alleviating feelings of anxiety and depression; and sumptuous flavanol-rich dark chocolate helps to regulate mood.

Now, we move towards actions which help to engage others – use the time you have, whether it be on or off the road, to bring the merriment to you wherever you are. Make every moment count and ensure time off is filled with activities – drinks at the local with friends, parties hosted with family or, quite simply, sitting down with loved ones to watch a favourite film. There’s no value that can be put on restive quality time. This should not be limited to time away from work – connect with colleagues and other regular road acquaintances and organise some festive fun. Anything as small as organising a round of bacon butties will perk up spirits all round. And the best part of stepping up and leading the charge? You never know how much you might be helping others who are feeling low by reaching out and making that first move.

Our final piece of advice begins to move away from the functional and towards the mental – driving over the Christmas period requires a shift in approach and thinking. Embrace the season – avoiding the revelry of December is nearing the impossible, and attempting this will only leave one in misery; so play your family’s favourite festive songs in the cab and take advantage of the opportunity to reflect on one’s blessings. As we speak of reflection, it is worth noting that the increasingly popular act of Mindfulness (the practice of bringing one’s attention to the present moment) may be a useful tool to master – the quiet roads and the beauty of Britain in its wintery glory provide the perfect backdrop to take some time to contemplate and appreciate the state of now. The most important matter to focus on? The visualisation of being back home – after all, as much as we may not be overjoyed working over December, we must focus on the fact that it is all temporary, and soon we will back home in front of the warmth of the fire, with the decorations glittering and our glasses full – Merry Christmas!

Rochdale Business Awards Success

November 14, 2017/in Driving, HGV, LGV, Logistics, lorry, News, safety /by The Source Partnership

Earlier this year, we entered Barnes Logistics into the annual Rochdale Business Awards after our first successful year at our new headquarters.

Established in 2011 to celebrate the achievements of businesses and business people within Rochdale Borough, we entered the ‘Business of the Year’ category, for businesses with a turnover of more than £5 million.

Rochdale Awards 5

The judging panel were looking to see how a business had performed over the past year in terms of turnover, team expansions and growth opportunities. In the past year we are proud of our incredible business expansion – increasing our fleet and team lead to needing to move to larger headquarters; and later in the year we grew the business even further by acquiring the haulage company GA Newsome. This business growth meant that we could create further jobs in Rochdale, and the opportunity to bring our top quality professional logistics services to even more time critical businesses.

We also outlined the highest standards to which each and every Barnes employee is trained – every driver is CPC qualified and then internally assessed, and graduates are closely mentored to develop to supervisory and managerial positions.

Finally, the judges were looking to see what businesses did to give back to their community – and we are proud of our commitment to supporting Springhill Hospice this year. Not only this, but our MD Chris Barnes also sponsors a number of sporting institutions across the North West.

The event was held at the magnificent Rochdale Town Hall, where our team met and mingled with other like-minded business professional in the glitz and glamour of a black-tie event. We were delighted to be announced as winners for the Business of the Year, in the highest turnover category. After the awards ceremony, we continued to the after party for a well-deserved celebratory drink!

Warehouse Safety Tips

June 8, 2017/in Driving, HGV, LGV, Logistics, lorry, News, safety /by The Source Partnership

While employee safety is a priority in any field, particular care needs to be taken in distribution, warehousing and manufacturing industries. And since June is National Safety Month, we’ve compiled some safety tips which we abide by at Barnes that are essential for working in a warehouse environment.

Training For Employees – It may seem simple, but the importance of thorough and regular training cannot be undervalued. Without it, it is undeniable that accidents are more likely, as employees will not know the proper procedures and the right health and safety regulations. With proper training, employees are equipped with the most up to date knowledge if they happen to be faced with dangerous situations.

Safe Spaces – Did you know that falls and slips are the most common accident within the workplace? This includes warehouses – but if employees are well aware of their surroundings and guard rails are installed, falls can be prevented. Likewise, spillages and messes must be cleaned up as soon as possible to avoid this kind of accident.

Good Organisation – Keeping the work environment clean and well organized is another simple way to prevent disaster which can often become overlooked. Good storage is necessary to prevent overflow issues; and storage solutions should be clearly labelled and easily accessible. Employees should also be able to co-ordinate with one another and communicate effectively to work in the most efficient and safe manner, and prevent accidents that may occur via miscommunication or mismanagement.

Safe Equipment – Another safety tip is to ensure that proper safety equipment is easily accessible and available and – most importantly – regularly used. Whether using hard hats or safety harnesses, employees who are capable of protecting themselves and do so as second nature are much less likely to be injured. This equipment should be regularly inspected to ensure that it offers maximum protection. Many companies have found success by adopting a zero-tolerance policy for employees who fail to use safety equipment or use it inappropriately.

Fire Prevention – Fires cause enormous and disastrous damage in the workplace, ruining lives and families – and yet can be so easily prevented. To prevent disaster: remove electrical cords from under carpets, check for leaks in containers holding flammable gasses and liquids and regularly replace worn and exposed wires. Should the worst happen and a fire break out, it’s vital to ensure that you have practiced regular fire drills (you’d be surprised how effective these are to keep employees calm in the case of emergencies), and make sure everyone knows where the fire exits are in the building, and actually know how to use a fire extinguisher and first aid kits.

Regular Maintenance – All equipment—especially any heavy machinery—should be regularly inspected and properly maintained. This not only helps prevent injuries, but keeps the warehouse running smoothly and efficiently. When it comes to the safety of your warehouse employees, spending a bit up front in proper safety training as well as in proper storage units and ergonomic tools can go a long way to saving considerably more in the high costs of workplace injuries.

We hope you join us in celebrating National Safety Month, and that these top Barnes tips will help to make your warehouse a safer – and, therefore, happier and more productive – place for your employees.

2016 Yearly Round Up

December 21, 2016/in Driving, HGV, LGV, lorry, News /by The Source Partnership

Another year has passed us by, and we’re looking forward to what 2017 will bring us here at Barnes Logistics. But before we look too far ahead, it’s important to look back and reflect on some of the successes of this past year.

We have purchased 13 vehicles throughout the year – 10 Scania R440 6×2 tractors and 3 Scania P230 18 tonne box body ridged vehicles, equating to an investment of almost £750,000 and taking our fleet to over 60 vehicles.

It was also great to be able to expand our business and help our clients and customers meet the demand for their products and extend our range and reach to match the ever-growing demand for effective logistics solutions.

The expansion of our fleet meant it was also time for us to move to bigger and better headquarters! Our 60 plus fleet now has a new home in Rochdale. Not only was this site a great location for our vehicles, but it also benefitted from two office blocks, state of the art warehousing and was conveniently located near to excellent road networks – being less than two miles from the M62.

With a larger fleet and a new base, naturally came an expansion to our team! We were delighted to welcome 3 new members of staff to the business to work across both the transport and HR departments. On top of this, in 2016 we also employed more drivers than ever before – we now have over 100 drivers on the road every day.

It’s certainly been a busy time so, as we head to the holiday season we’d like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and Happy New Year. What will 2017 have in store? We can’t wait to find out!

BARNES LOGISTICS ACQUIRES NEW SITE FOR GROWTH

May 27, 2016/in News /by The Source Partnership

Barnes Logistics, one of the UK’s leading logistics companies has acquired a new four-acre site on Cowm Top Lane, Rochdale.  The new site will be their national headquarters and be the principal home of the company’s growing fleet of more than 50 vehicles.

The site, which will work in conjunction with their other sites in Coventry and Durham, also contains two office blocks as well as 50’000 sq. ft. of quality warehousing to support clients storage requirements.

The new Rochdale site was carefully selected due to its excellent road network access, as the site is located less than two miles from the M62, providing great access not only to the North West but to all of the UK.

Chris Barnes, the managing director of Barnes Logistics comments: “Rochdale provides us with a strategic location in terms of the transport network as well as the additional room we need for growth.  As our new headquarters, it’s ideal for our fleet of vehicles to service the entire UK, while the warehousing adds additional quality facilities to our client offering.”

Earlier this year Barnes Logistics announced that it was adding an additional 12 vehicles to its fleet to cope with the demand for their ‘just in time’ logistic solutions.

Barnes Logistics specialises in providing logistical support and warehousing to customers across the UK.  The company operates a fleet of more than 50 vehicles from seven depots across the UK and warehousing in Rochdale.
